SONA LISA DANCE COMPANY PERFORMING AT ASIAN VOICE CHARITY AWARDS 2019

March 2019: SLDC have been invited to perform at the Asian Voice Charity Awards on Friday 17th May at the Hilton, Park Lane (London).

Powered by Charity Clarity, the evening is a celebration of the excellence delivered by organisations (small or large) who operate both in Great Britain and globally. The evening casts a much needed spotlight on those organisations working tirelessly to solve the most pressing issues of our time.

KATHAK DANCE WORKSHOP IN MOMBASA, KENYA

 

March 2019: On 30 & 31 March, SLDC Artistic Director Sonia is excited be delivering a Kathak classical dance workshop in her hometown of Mombasa, Kenya for students of locally based dance teacher Priya Bajaria Majithia. 

Says Sonia Chandaria Tillu, Artistic Director of SLDC on the workshop, "I am extremely excited to be able to sharing classical Kathak dance with a new generation of budding dancers from my hometown of Mombasa. Across the 2 days, I hope to share experiences of my dance journey through a workshop focused on Kathak classical dance technique ​and expression".

SONA LISA DIRECTOR RECEIVES BRITISH COUNCIL GRANT FOR PROJECT ON MIGRATION

 

January 2019: Sona Lisa Artistic Director Sonia Chandaria Tillu  has been awarded a grant from the British Council new Art new Audiences scheme for the R&D of her new solo production [Mango - working title].

 

The production will incorporate dance, music and poetic narration, bringing together artistic talent from the UK, India and East Africa. The project is based on Sonia's family migratory story from Gujarat to Kenya and finally the UK,  and challenges notions of identity arising from being categorised as British Asian.

SONIA CHANDARIA TILLU PERFORMING AT CUT THE BAKWAAS 2019

March 2019: Sona Lisa Artistic Director Sonia Chandaria Tillu  has been invited to perform at Cut the Bakwaas 2019 on Friday 8th March at the Lyric Theatre, Hammersmith (London), as part of the Evolution Festival.

Presented by the Performance Lab, the evening is an ode to being unapologetically Brown and British. Join us to converse in an evening of music, performances, and good vibes to unify the masses. Stories will be shared through multidisciplinary artworks, and performances led by British Asian women.

SONA LISA DIRECTOR AT VIP OPENING NIGHT FOR UKYA CITY TAKEOVER

 

February 2019: On 07 February, Sonia attended the official launch of the UKYA City Takeover: Nottingham 2019, an exciting, multi art form international event which will be taking place across the city of Nottingham from 7 - 13 February 2019. Sonia is featured here with Michelle Bowen, UKYA Director.

The UKYA City Takeover will present an exemplar survey show of contemporary art, performance and music. Expect to encounter art and performance in cultural spaces as well as unusual places. From caves to cafes; markets to museums; studios to the streets - the City Takeover weaves a rich tapestry across Nottingham.

SONIA CHANDARIA TILLU PERFORMS AT MAKAR SANKRANTI FESTIVAL

January 2019: On 26 January, Sonia was invited to do a guest performance at the Midlands Marathi Association's annual Makar Sankranti Festival. Featured here, Sonia with the Mayor of Birmingham Andy Street at the event.

HEMANTIKA KATHAK FESTIVAL 2018 - DUET BY SONIA CHANDARIA TILLU & SHYAM DATTANI

November 2018:  Sonia Chandaria Tillu and & BBC Young Dancer South Asian Category Winner 2017 Shyam Dattani choreographed and performed at the Beck Theatre as guest artists at SBDC's annual  Hemantika Kathak Festival 2018.

 

This collaborative piece -  Shiva stuti in taal jhaptaal - saw the artists experimenting with the boundaries of Kathak movement beyond their respective traditional training. Costume design: Shyam Dattani; Lighting: Dinesh Poddar
